Q: What is the ruling if the wife stays with her in laws in the same house sharing all spaces like the kitchen, bathroom etc. Are the in laws allowed to use her bedroom as they wish? If she is not there can they sleep in the room and let other people in the room? The wife’s possessions are still in the room and she is not informed of the people using it.
A: Those parts of the house that are for common use, e.g. kitchen, dining room, lounge, etc can be occupied by different people of the home at different times (with maintaining the laws of purdah). However, the rooms that are occupied and reserved for specific individuals then it is in keeping with respect and etiquette that privacy be accorded to the individuals of these rooms. However if there is an understanding among the people of the house, that when the room doors are left open then the home people are permitted to enter, then in this case there is no problem in entering the room since all the individuals of the home do not mind. Apart from this time, at other times privacy should be accorded to the individuals of these rooms. Just as it is improper for the daughter in-law to enter the mother in-laws room at any time without taking permission, similarly it is not morally correct that the mother in-law or people of the home infringe upon the privacy of the daughter in-law by entering her room at anytime without her permission.
And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
